Genesis 22 is the culmination of the story of Abraham, where he faces a test from God to offer up his son Isaac as a sacrifice. This passage foreshadows the person and work of Jesus Christ in three ways. First, as Abraham obeyed, Jesus fully obeyed. Abraham struggled throughout his life with obedience, but Jesus lived a sinless and perfect life. Second, as Abraham was given a substitute, so was Jesus given as our substitute for sin. This story clearly points forward to the substitutionary atonement of Jesus Christ for us, when Jesus earned our salvation by taking our punishment on the cross. Third, Abraham was blessed, but Jesus opens up eternal blessing. Every spiritual blessing is given to us through Jesus, and while we so often focus on material blessings, the greatest blessing of all is to know God.
