Today we wish our Pastor Emeritus Erwin Lutzer a very happy 80th birthday! We are so grateful for the faithfulness of our dear Pastor Lutzer these many years.
He has been faithful in the proclamation of God’s Word. For over four decades, he has taught us well and opened our eyes to the truth and beauty of the Scriptures. He truly loves the gospel.
He has been faithful in following Christ. His integrity and character have been forged in a lifetime of obedient surrender to his Savior and Lord. We have followed him as he follows Christ.
He has been faithful to his family. His love for Rebecca and his daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren is evident at every turn. He has shown us how to love and lead.
He has been faithful to God’s purposes for The Moody Church. I’m not sure we realize how difficult it is to retire from leading such a precious church and entrust it with a generous and encouraging heart to another pastor. Yet that is just what Pastor Lutzer has done so well. I am forever grateful for his support and count it a tremendous honor to partner in the work of the gospel here at Moody Church. He has passed the torch well.
So Pastor Lutzer, we wish you a blessed 80th birthday and we give thanks to God for the grace that your life is to us! You are loved, more than you know!
Today we also welcome Dr. Ray Ortlund, Jr. to The Moody Church pulpit. Ray is a graduate of Wheaton College, Dallas Theological Seminary, the University of California at Berkeley, and the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. He served as pastor of Nashville’s Immanuel Church until 2019 (and continues to serve as a pastor in residence). He and his wife Jani have been married—and have served in gospel ministry—for over 40 years, and have four children and thirteen grandchildren. I’m excited to learn from him this morning as he opens God’s Word for us.
