They say there are two topics you should never bring up in polite conversation: politics and religion. Why? Because convictions run deep and tempers quickly flare. Most people learn to change the subject. But Jesus wades in where even angels fear to tread. In Luke 20—our passage today—the religious leaders come after Jesus and try to trap Him, first in a political landmine and then with a divisive religious issue. And both times, Jesus navigates clear with a brilliance that leaves them in stunned wonderment.
Jesus is not just the Son of God, He’s the most brilliant person to have ever lived! He can go toe-to-toe with the savviest politicians and hold His own with the most credentialed theologians. Jesus runs circles around those who think they’ve got Him pinned. I love seeing this side of Jesus. It’s both delightful and dazzling to watch Him at work.
Today, we’ll see Jesus not only outmaneuver those who are trying to entrap Him, but also clarify for us what really matters in life. His laser-focus shows us what’s most important. When it comes to Politics, Religion, and the Meaning of Life, Jesus is here to show us a better way.
So let’s lean in and learn from the Master! He knows what life is all about. And He reminds us: we are loved, more than we know!
